Burney Lions Club to Recycling, Composting, and Disposal Event

The event will teach residents how to compost, recycle and dispose of hazardous waste in California

The Burney Lions Club, a service organization dedicated to improving the community and environment, is hosting a free and informative event on tentatively scheduled for Saturday, September 17th, 2023 at the Burney Lions Hall. The event, titled Eco Day 2023, will teach residents how to compost, recycle and dispose of kitchen food waste, medication, and hazardous waste in California.

The event is timely, as new composting laws for California will take effect in 2024, requiring residents and businesses to separate their organic waste from their trash. Organic waste includes food scraps, yard trimmings, paper products and other materials that can be composted. Composting is an environmentally-friendly method of food waste disposal that reduces greenhouse gas emissions and creates rich soil for gardening.

The event will also cover how to recycle paper, plastic, metal and glass items and reduce the environmental impact of these materials. Recycling conserves natural resources, saves energy and water, and prevents pollution. Recycling also creates jobs and supports the local economy.

Additionally, the event will educate residents on how to dispose of medication, batteries, used oil and other hazardous waste safely and legally. Hazardous waste can pose a threat to human health and the environment if not handled properly. It can contaminate soil, water and air, and cause fires, explosions or poisoning. Hazardous waste should never be thrown in the trash or poured down the drain. It should be taken to a designated collection site or event for proper disposal.

The event will feature presentations from experts, demonstrations of composting and recycling techniques, and tips and resources on how to live a more eco-friendly lifestyle. Attendees will also have the opportunity to sign up for a free compost bin and a recycling program.

The event is open to all residents of Burney and surrounding areas. To reserve a spot, attendees are asked to RSVP by calling (530) 421-8889 or emailing burneylionsclub@gmail.com.

The Burney Lions Club hopes that the event will inspire residents to make a difference for themselves and their community by adopting green living practices.
